Cost of a Television Aerial Install

Installing a new aerial or satellite dish is one of the most affordable home improvements, but exactly how much does it cost to fit a TV aerial? Below we will look at the costs of aerial installation, and also explore the main factors that impact pricing.

  • Aerial/Satellite – as you might imagine, not all TV aerials and satellite dishes are created equal. There are a wide range to choose from, with basic aerials costing as little as £15 and high-end aerials costing several hundred. In most cases, the cost of purchasing an aerial will fall within the range of £15 – £50.
  • Installation Factors – The height of the install, configuration of the wiring and number of TV ports required will all impact the price. Higher installs and those requiring the wiring to be installed internally (rather than on the buildings exterior) will cost more. Every additional TV port will also increase the cost.
  • Location – as with almost all home improvements, the cost of installation is likely to differ in different parts of the UK. Generally, the most expensive prices are found in London and the South of England. Areas that lack local installers will also result in higher installation costs.
  • Preparation – it is important to consider any preparation and building work that may be required as part of your TV aerial installation. For example, will the old aerial need to be removed?
  • Freeview Signal – As part of a good TV aerial installation, your fitter will ensure that you receive great reception. However, some areas have better signal than others. If the signal is strong, the antenna can be installed at gutter level or even within the loft, reducing costs. For areas with reduced signal, the antenna will need to be higher and an amplifier may be required, increasing costs.

TV Aerial Fitting Prices

The cost of a TV aerial installation normally ranges from approximately £100 to £200.  This is based on a property that is no more than 2-storeys, requires less than 20m of wiring and has the cables running on the buildings exterior. For internal wiring, you can expect to pay significantly more due to the greater level of difficulty involved and increased installation time.

When installing a new antenna, it is common to also add new TV points throughout your home. However, this will increase the overall cost of the project.

If you are an experienced DIY’er, you may want to tackle the installation yourself, and keep costs to a minimum. As many installations take place at a height, it is important to use safety measures to prevent accidents and injuries.

TV Aerial Installers

With prices from as little as £100 and fast installation speeds, a television aerial or satellite dish installation can quickly improve your TV watching experience. Upgrading to a digital aerial will ensure that you receive all of the available channels, including a number of HD channels.

We have aerial installers available throughout the UK, who will deliver a high quality installation and perfectly tune your TV. Installers can also add TV ports throughout your house, allowing you to enjoy your favourite shows, whichever room you are in.

How long will an installation take?

Antenna installation is a very fast home improvement, that causes minimal disturbance to your home. In most cases, installing a new aerial on your roof will take between 1 to 2 hours. However, for more complicated installations and numerous TV ports, the work can take longer.

Aerial Repairs

Bad weather and high winds can cause problems with TV aerials. If your aerial is damaged, and is no longer under warranty, they can often be quickly repaired. Repairing an aerial is often cheaper than replacing. However, if the aerial is badly damaged, replacement may be the best option, and will help provide all the channels available in your area.

As part of your repair, the TV will be tuned to ensure all of your favourite channels can be accessed again.

Freesat vs Freeview

If you are looking to install a new TV aerial or satellite dish, you have probably seen Freesat and Freeview mentioned several times. But what are they, and which is right for you?

As their names suggest, they are both free television services. Freeview is the most commonly used service, and requires a TV aerial to receive the signal. To receive the Freesat signal, homeowners will require a small satellite dish.

Freeview or Freesat Installation – What are the costs?

Whilst the television services are free to access, you will require the use of either a satellite dish or roof antenna to receive the signal. Satellite dishes are typically less expensive to install than a TV aerial, but do require accessories to access the signal, such as a set-top box, which increases the overall cost of a dish.

A Freeview TV aerial installation will cost approximately £140, whilst a Freesat satellite installation will cost approximately £80 (not including the required accessories, such as a set-top box).

Freesat or Freeview – Which is better?

If you have an older television, you will require a set-top box to access either of these services. However, many newer TV’s have Freeview tuners built in, but the case is not the case for Freesat. Also, Freeview set top boxes are significantly cheaper, starting from around £20, compared with Freesat set top boxes that often more than £100.

In terms of coverage, Freesat wins hands down. As it is beamed from a satellite, you should be able to receive the signal anywhere in the UK. However, 15% of homes only receive limited access to Freeview channels and the signal does not cover all of the UK.

In terms of channels, Freesat is once again the winner, offering consumers more than 200 channels. Whilst Freeview is adding additional channels, they only offer around 70 channels.

Alternatives to Freeview & Freesat

There are two additional services that may suit your needs:

Youview: Whilst it is associated with the pay TV services offered by BT, TalkTalk and Plusnet, there is a perception that Youview costs more. Youview boxes can be purchased from many high street retailers, and offer a range of channels and catch up services. You can also add the premium services, if you want, but you don’t need to pay any monthly subscription to access the standard channels.

Freesat from Sky: Many consumers assume that you receive the same channels with normal Freesat as you do with Freesat from Sky, however there are a few additional channels with the latter. The service cost £175 for the installation and a basic Freesat box, and features a total of 240 free-to-air channels, with no monthly or ongoing subscription. You can however quickly and easily upgrade to Sky’s premium channels and services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are a few questions our visitors regularly ask about aerial installation. Our answers below will hopefully help you, but if we have missed anything, please get in touch.

As long as your aerial is below a certain size, you should not require planning permission. However, there are rules that apply to certain homes, such as those in conservation areas. There are also different rules for flats and apartments. If you have any doubts, it is a good idea to contact your local council authority or Planning Portal for clarification.

If you are renting or don’t own your property, it is also essential that you request the owners permission before installing a new aerial or satellite.

A TV aerial or satellite dish installation can definitely be a DIY project. However, there are dangers associated with working at heights, so safety precautions should be taken. Ensuring you receive a great signal from your aerial is important, it is important you choose the right type of aerial and point it in the correct direction. As an easy guide, you can use the other aerials in your neighbourhood for the best orientation of your aerial.

Installing a new aerial or satellite is one of the fastest and less obtrusive home improvements available. Most installs are completed in less than 2 hours, and most work is carried out externally. You will not need to vacate your property whilst the work is carried out.

It is often recommended that you choose an installer who is a member of the Confederation of Aerial Industries (CAI). A great reason to choose a CAI member to install your TV aerial is because the organisation will guarantee their members work for 12 months, which is great news for consumers.

If your fitter is taking away waste (such as an old aerial or satellite dish), they should have a waste carriers licence.

Asking questions is a great way to better understand potential installers. Below are a few questions that you can ask installers to gain a better understanding of their experience and services.

  1. How long have you been installing aerials?
  2. Do you have any example photos of your previous work?
  3. Can you provide testimonials or references?
  4. Do you have public liability insurance?
  5. Are you a member of the Confederation of Aerial Industries (CAI)?
  6. How long will the installation take?
  7. Do you supply everything needed for the project?
  8. Are there any additional costs I should be aware of?
  9. Does your pricing include VAT?
  10. Will you take away any rubbish?
  11. Do you provide any discounts of concessions?

Other Considerations

Most TV aerial installers and satellite fitters will provide a warranty for their work. In most cases, the warranty will last for between 6 – 24 months. If your chosen installer is a member of the CAI, you will also be covered by a 12 month warranty on the installation, even if the fitter is no longer operating.

A warranty will provide peace of mind that if anything was to go wrong, your aerial will be quickly fixed.

We recommend choosing an aerial installer who is a member of the CAI. Not only will this help ensure that they abide by the strict rules of the CAI, but they also provide a workmanship guarantee for all of their members.

It is a good idea to always ensure your chosen installer has public liability insurance. This is an insurance that will protect you and your home if something was to go wrong during the building. You can request a copy of your builders PLI certificate, which they should be able to email or print for you.
